In my opinion, however, this four volume set by Evangaline Walton is by far the best. In the past, I've had the pleasure of frequenting some of the fine establishments owned by Tom Hennessy and his wife, Sandy. But the story is an excellent one with two narratives, one of a self-taught 54-year-old widow who has spent much of her life masquerading as the simple and grumpy concierge of an apartment building for the wealthy in Paris, and the other of Paloma, a precocious preteen who lives there, sees the hypocrisy of the upper class, and is determined to act in a tragic way to make a statement about it.
