For a portion of this volume, Hayate ends up leaving Ayana's side and so Ayana feels relieved at first but then appears to get jealous that Hayate is with someone else .Needless to say, Hayate ends up saying that and gets whacked bigtime by Ayana. Milliner Philip Somerville summarizes that je ne sais quoi of the Princess, that made her so beloved the world over, very simply and succinctly when he states "she glowed warmth" (page 204). We also meet a major supporting character for future Gor novels, Samos the slaver of Port Kar. The emphasis is still on the action and adventure in "Assassin of Gor" more than the Gorean philosophy that would come to dominate the later volumes in the series.
